Injury risk profiling, injury prediction, and injury prevention are pivotal topics in elite sport, marked by complexity and evolving methodologies, especially considering the more recent introduction of AI models. While the prospect of predicting injuries using AI seems promising, it’s important to acknowledge the nuances and limitations surrounding its application. Ultimately, while AI models may be increasing in  accuracy, they will never eliminate injuries from elite sport completely. Therefore, prioritising the creation of comprehensive, transparent and individualised  injury risk profiles is paramount. This approach aligns with platforms like Smartabase, which emphasise collaboration  and adaptability, rather than a “black-box” approach.

Introducing Peter and Royal Antwerp F.C.’s Data Ecosystem

Meet Dr. Peter Catteeuw, the Head of Performance at Royal Antwerp F.C., a pivotal figure driving performance and injury prevention strategies at the club. Within the club’s data ecosystem, a robust framework is established to collect and analyse diverse datasets crucial for injury risk profiling in Smartabase.

Peter explains the data sources integrated into the profiling process and how their club-specific Smartabase deployment facilitates visualisation, analysis and ultimately, decision making. Notably, bespoke-algorithms within Smartabase are collaboratively built between Teamworks Consultants and Dr Peter’s team, leveraging practitioner experience, as well as thresholds, benchmarks and normative data from scientific literature.  This approach ensures that the injury profiling approach is transparent, but importantly, this process is also adaptable, as new literature is published.

Collaborative Research and Validation

Dr Peter has collaborated with the University of Antwerp using machine learning initiatives to explore the relationship between VALD physical testing data and injury occurrence. The results of this work can then drive the evolution of the algorithms implemented in their Smartabase site. Further, as more data is collected in Smartabase season upon season, this will be used as the basis for the validation of their injury risk profiling processes.   This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to transparent, evidence-based practices and the continual improvement in the space.

Injury risk profiling is a dynamic field, demanding a multifaceted approach grounded in transparency and collaboration. Dr. Peter Catteeuw’s insights from Royal Antwerp F.C. offer a practical glimpse into how elite clubs navigate this complex landscape. By prioritising transparency, adaptability, and collaboration, platforms like Smartabase pave the way for more effective injury prevention strategies. As we continue to refine our understanding of injury risk, the collaboration between practitioners, researchers, and technology remains pivotal in safeguarding athlete well-being and performance.

We extend our gratitude to Dr. Peter Catteeuw and the attendees for taking the time out of their busy schedules to attend, and their invaluable contributions to the discussion.
