It is important to me to be prepared, efficient and to work hard. What experience in your life has shaped who you are today?Much of what has shaped me comes from my time in the Marine Corps. Getting a chance to work with other Marines and the values that the Marines embody has really influenced me in my day to day life. The coaches I work with at Maryland on the lacrosse team and across the athletic department are role models for me as a person and a coach. How did your military service influence your coaching style/philosophy?A major lesson I learned about leadership in the Marine Corps that I apply to my coaching is: Don’t ask those you lead to do something you are not willing to do yourself. I try to teach my players to take initiative. I help them understand what we are trying to do, and let them figure out how to do it better or faster. I try to motivate the team by stressing that the hard work they put in is not just for themselves, but for their brothers on the team. What advice would you give to your past self? The two pieces of advice I would give to myself are: ask more questions, and develop stronger relationships. I’ve been fortunate in my life to have been around some extraordinary people. If I could go back, I would have taken better advantage of the opportunities to learn from those people. My father once told me, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” That is an important piece of advice regardless of what you do.What is your central message to your team?Respect the process. We really focus on the process, details and fundamentals of everything we do.
